Pet Cage Accessories

You know, animals really are a lot like us. Sure we both want a nice big house, but what we really, really want is all kinds of cool stuff to put in it. At For Other Living Things, we carry a nice assortment of things to make your small animal’s cage a bit more fun and homey. Of course, the products we carry are safe for your little furry pals, no inappropriate materials or harmful dyes or adhesives here. (For full cage info, check out our small animal cage page).

Small animals such as rabbits, mice, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, and chinchillas love to get all snugly. Why not get your critter a cozy Sleep-e-Sack or Mini Cozy Cup to nestle in, or one of our hidey houses to fill with bedding and burrow into? Our organic cotton Critter Bedding is super soft and great for making into a little bed.

Speaking of cozy, have you noticed that the wire flooring of your pet’s cage seems like an awful thing to walk and sleep on? Well it is awful. Wire floors have crippled more than one set of little feet. If your fuzzy friend lives in a wire bottom cage, you should consider getting a new solid bottom cage. Until you get a new cage, your pal really needs our cagemats. Available in 6x6 or 12x12 sizes and fumigant free, they can be cut to fit your pet’s cage. In addition to being tootsie savers, cagemats are great flooring for any cage, and they are totally edible, so your critter can play and gnaw away!

Little critters like rats, chins, and mice are climbers, and the Sleep-n-Ledge is a great accessory that will make cage climbing even more enjoyable. It attaches firmly by bolting onto any wire cage, and provides your pet with a perch they can climb to and hang out on for a while. We think it is a great way to provide your critter with more living area by taking advantage of all that unused vertical space. Remember, ledges and other high places are no good for bunnies, guinea pigs, and even full-size hamsters who fall and get hurt.

Hayracks are more of a necessity than an accessory for critters like bunnies, guinea pigs, and chins. They need their hay, but it sure can get messy. That is why we think Rollin the Hay and Cardboard Hayrack are such nifty cage accessories. They are refillable, help contain the mess, and make hay even more fun! Remember that little friends like mice and rats don't digest hay, so hay and hay accessories really aren't for them.

And let's not forget the classic cage accessory, a wheel for exercising. There are a couple things to consider when selecting wheels. The first is that your wheel should have a solid floor; little fingers, toes, arms, and legs can get caught in a fast moving wheel, leading to serious injury. Second, you should choose the right size wheel for your pet. A wheel that is too small can cause back injury as your critter bends to fit the shape of the wheel. A wheel that is too big can be tough for your pet to maneuver. And remember that pets like bunnies and guinea pigs aren't designed for that kind of back-bendeng exercise, so wheels aren't the cage accessory them. We love Wodent Wheels. They feature a solid running surface so little toes and legs will not get caught and broken. Little critters love the entry / exit portals, and they keep them from taking a nasty tumble. Small animals like to run along walls, it makes them feel safe, so they are just happy as can be running around in their semi-enclosed wheel.

If all this running and playing leaves your critter too hot on a warm day, you can give them a Chin-Chiller to help them cool off. The Chin-Chiller is a nice, cool slab of granite that is oh-so nice for a little furry body to stretch out on. You can even put it in the fridge on a really hot day.

With all of these great accessories, you can make your small pet’s cage a really safe, great home.
